As I was setting up my display for a car show recently, I stood back to check out how everything looked. What caught my eye the most were the two hand painted GarageBoyz Magazine signs. These signs are true works of art and are hand lettered and hand pinstriped by a kulture artist named Fat Daddy . It dawned on me then, just how much kulture artists contribute to our kulture. They are the one that help us represent ourselves and be part of this lifestyle of kulture.
No matter how much work somebody puts into his car or bike, and no matter how great a mechanic a person is, it is usually a painter, who lays down the hot-rod flames, the pinstriping or candy apple red paint or whatever it may be, that puts the finishing touch on the car or bike.
A great deal of us that are part of the kulture community are tattooed, some more heavily than others. I can say that I have never tattooed myself, just like most people have not. It is by the hand and skills of the tattoo artist that we are able to wear the skin art that we have.
This leads me back to the sign painters, pinstripers and other kulture artists. These folks are the one's who really help us define and show our passion. Imagine for a moment if Ed Roth didn't bother to draw Rat Fink or if Von Dutch never laid down a pinstripe line.
How many times at car and bike shows has somebody admired your ride because of the paint job, or how about when somebody compliments you on your tattoo. When people see my display for the magazine that features cars, bikes and tattoos, it is not just me they are seeing, and it certainly not just my boyish good looks that bring them over. They see the pinstriping and lettering on the sign, the tattoos , the El Camino ( with pinstriping by Pinstripe Chris). My point is they see the representation of the kulture community that I am a part of. It is ultimately up to us to contribute to our kulture community, by keeping our cars and bikes going, supporting business that support us, and in just being part of this generation of kulture that keeps it all going for the next generation. But, I say this...It is the Kulture Artist that truly help us look so good doing it. So support your local Artist, get that car or bike pinstriped, have your shop sign or car show sign hand painted or go get a tattoo. You'll not only keep our kulture alive, but you'll keep it colorful.
